Feedback sought on town's proposed health protection air quality by-law

January 18, 2010 - For immediate release
Public consultation sessions will be held this week on the draft health protection air quality by-law released for public review and comment by Oakville Town Council in December.

"Neither the federal nor the provincial government has legislated the regulation of fine PM, so we are taking action to protect the health of the community with this by-law," Mayor Burton said. "It's just another step towards improving the air quality in our town, and joins a host of other initiatives including policies in our Livable Oakville Plan and energy conservation initiatives."

A consultation and information session focused on the proposed by-law's effects on business and industry will be held on Tuesday, January 19 from 1 to 4 p.m., and an information meeting for the general public is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 21. Both meetings will be held at Town Hall. Copies of all the presentation materials will be available on the town's website following the meeting for those who are unable to attend.

The purpose of the proposed by-law is to protect the health of Oakville residents and the environment by assessing and controlling emissions of fine particulate matter (fine PM) from facilities within the town. The by-law would affect existing and proposed facilities that emit fine PM and precursor pollutants (substances that could produce fine PM when combined with other substances in the air), and would make information on fine PM emissions in Oakville available to the public.
